Snappy Dance Theater, Dancer & Development Director                   Cambridge, MA                        2005-2007
Carey performed and toured with Snappy Dance Theater internationally in France and Bermuda, nationally in California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Tennessee, Virginia, and at Jacob’s Pillow, and taught workshops for children and adults. She performed in 14 repertory pieces and collaboratively created 2 new works with the company. She instigated the company’s collaboration with MIT scientist / artist Jonathan Bachrach for the creation of String Beings. You can see a full-page image of Carey in Dance Magazine (Dec 2007, p. 36) photographed as a computer image. Carey was also Director of Development for a year and a half, raising $173,000 in FY07. The company was voted "best dance performers" in 2007 by Boston Phoenix Readers' Pick Awards.

Rebecca Rice Dance, Dancer                                                           Cambridge, MA                         2006-2007
Carey performed with Rice at the Cunningham Studios and American Dance Guild in NYC, and at MIT and Green Street Studios in Cambridge. Rice created 3 new roles on Carey.

Prometheus Dance, Dancer, Marketing Consultant                         Cambridge, MA                        2004-2005
Carey performed with Prometheus at venues throughout the Boston area, including the Arsenal Center for the Arts, Boston Center for the Arts, Boston Conservatory Theater, Babson College and Northern Essex Community College. Carey performed in 4 works, and took part in the creation of two new works.

Nicola Hawkins Dance Company, Dancer, Fundraising Consultant            Somerville, MA            2001-2005
Carey worked with Nicola for 5 years, performing in NY at St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery, in Rhode Island and at numerous Boston venues including, Peabody Essex Museum, Zero Arrow Theater, Tsai Performance Center, Cambridge Multi-Cultural Arts Center. Carey performed live improvisation with Bobby McFerrin at Boston Symphony Hall in 2004. She was a feature dancer in “Arcus”, a 2002 film made by Alla Kovgan and Jeff Silva that screened at ADF in 2003 and Lincoln Center NYC in 2004. Carey performed in 13 of Nicola’s pieces, and took part in the creation of 8 new works. Carey instigated Nicola’s collaboration with batik artist Mary Edna Fraser in 2005. Carey also designed marketing and fundraising materials for Nicola.

Anna Myer & Dancers, Dancer                                                        Cambridge, MA                        2002
Carey performed with Anna Myer at Jacob’s Pillow and at Green Street Studios in Cambridge. She performed in 5 repertory works and participated in the creation of one new work.

“Dance on Camera”, WGBH Art Close Up, Soloist                       Local Public Television             March 2004
Carey worked as choreographer and solo dancer with WGBH-Boston to create four short ‘dance on camera’ segments that were used as interludes between contemporary dance films. The show aired on WGBH’s Art Close Up program.

Peanut Butter & Jelly Dance Company, Dancer                           Cambridge, MA                        2002-2004
Carey danced with PB&J for two years performing and teaching at dozens of elementary schools in Eastern Mass.  

Batuke do Norte, Dancer                                                                  Cambridge, MA                        2002-2003
Trained and performed Afro-Brazilian Maracatu dances and learned cultural contexts of dances. Performed locally

Early Performances                                                                       
One of Carey’s first performances was singing a solo in Menotti’s Amahl & the Night Visitors at Hollywood Presbyterian Church at the age of 10. She performed with ballet schools in her youth, at South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts, at Piccolo Spoleto Festival (Charleston, SC) during high school, and at SMU during college. She also modeled in department stores in her youth, and acted in commercials during high school.

 

CHOREOGRAPHIC EXPERIENCE

Carey has worked individually and collaboratively with other dancers, visual artists, and musicians, creating over a dozen works that have been presented in Boston area venues since 2000. Carey’s work has been presented by Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center, Dance Complex Shared Choreographers Concerts, Mobius Artspace, Performance Works Project, Dance Renewal Project, Green Street Studios, Zeitgeist Gallery and at Trinity College in Connecticut. Carey was Co-Director of Royal Jelly Collective and the Open Floor Project from 2000 to 2003 during which time she hosted over 30 “open mics” for dance, produced 5 evening-length concerts, and produced 2 shared concerts as fundraisers for Green Street Studios.
